Greece is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. However, its wines were relatively little known outside of Greece. The last two decades saw an extensive upgrade of the industry. A system of appellations was implemented to assure consumers of the origins and quality of their wine purchases. Greece has a large amount of indigenous grape varietals like Agiorghitiko, Xinomavro, Mavrodaphne (red) and Roditis, Moschofilero, Assyrtiko (white). Recently, international grape varietals started playing a bigger role in Greece’s wine production.
